One of those Sustainable Development Goals that appeal to me, the moistest
For many reasons
But I am foodieβ¦.fully certified by Ntemid
Food means everything to me
Itβs the basis of my existence
However good or bad I may be at all I do
Without the ounce of carbs or proteins or fiber or iron, I ainβt a thing
I recall back in college
One day, I was in the dormitory
Looking at my friends eating their grain and sipping at their Splash
And I, on the other end, had nothing
Not because I couldnβt afford to get myself something but because I had wasted it all like a fool and his money
A lump grew in my throat
I excused myself and wept away in silence
That taught me a bunch of very important lessons in life that I still take with me till todayβ¦.
To never waste any grain of food
To never be a part of the estimated 233 million people in Africa that goes without a meal in a day
Most of all,to never take life for granted, as I usually say
So today, letβs talk about Sustainable Development Goal 2, which is Zero Hunger
The goal here is, βTo end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agricultureβ.
What is there, for you, to care about goal 2?
Extreme hunger and malnutrition remains a barrier to sustainable development and creates a trap from which people cannot easily escape. Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive individuals, who are more prone to disease and thus often unable to earn more and improve their livelihoods. There are nearly 800 million people who suffer from hunger worldwide, the vast majority in developing countries.
I guess you wonder why with enough food to feed everyone on the planet, why are there so many hungry people?
Well, thatβs due to a number of issues like poor harvesting practices, as well as food wastage have contributed to food scarcity. Wars have also had a negative impact on the availability of food and have led to a destruction of the environment, which is critical to grow food.
Just like the United Nations says on this,
βWe all want our families to have enough food to eat that is safe and nutritious. A world with zero hunger can positively impact our economies, health, education, equality and social developmentβ.
Itβs a key piece of building a better future for everyone. Additionally, with hunger limiting human development, we will not be able to achieve the other sustainable development goals such as education, health and gender equality.
If we ainβt careful enough, by 2030, we will have to part ways with at least an estimated additional $267 billion, on average to end world hunger!!!
Let thatsink for a second and think about it close enoughβ¦.and what the world can do with all that cash, hhhmmm!
Just like I,You can make changes in your own lifeβat home, at work and in the communityβ by supporting local farmers or markets and making sustainable food choices, supporting good nutrition for all, and fighting food waste.
Yeahβ¦. wasting of food is real and just so sad! I mean, why would you need to load 3 ladles of beans on your plate or tray if you wonβt even manage to complete just 1 of the3, huh? Many other people out there could have those same beans that youβve decided to throw in the trash, you know right?
You can also use your power as a consumer and voter as well, demanding businesses and governments make the choices and changes that will make Zero Hunger a reality.Join the conversation, whether on social media platforms or in your local communities. At least, this is what the team at the UN thinks!
Agree with them or me, for that matter?
Whatβs your take on this?
Food…..basic necessity for all

Yyyeeaaahhhhh….you’re most welcome, Dee!
Hunger is a vicious cycle, isn’t it? Like you said, nutrition is a basic physical need, which, if not met, impacts on the ability of individuals to make wider changes, which feeds back to perpetuating hunger. I know that I very much live a privileged life and food wastage isn’t something I take great measures to address. The irony is that it’s in the wealthy societies where food is in overabundance that the food is wasted, and that food never has a chance of reaching the hungry societies.
So sad, Sunday! Thanks for sharing and the honesty.
It’s heartbreaking that world hunger continues to be such a huge issue. This is something we should all be commited to ending. And working on ending the massive amount of food waste is a very good step in the right direction. Everyone deserves to have enough to eat! Thanks for sharing β‘
Oh yyeeaahhhh!!! You’re welcome, Sara. ?β€
These photos are heartbreaking. You are absolutely right, we waste so much food. I know that I am guilty of that myself. Thanks for the eye-opening information!

Hunger is totally unnecessary and can be fixed. We waste so much!
Yyyeeaaahhhhh…..so heartbreaking and yet many of our people go hungry! ??
I know I certainly take my food situation for granted. Thank you for shedding and spreading the light on this important topic! I have told you this before and I will probably say it 100 times– you’re doing amazing work! Keep it up!
?? aaawww….thank you, Lauren!
Iam a Nutritionist who had never appreciated what a handfull of posho means to some pipo coz I all through I was in central region. Not until I moved and worked upcountry. So Hunger is real.It hurts me seeing undernourished children every day but I just keep praying for our Uganda and go on to impact communities through various interventions .#Whenever you waste, know thereβs a child starving .send me a kilo of beans and we impact Nationals and refugees . Thanks Ntemid
For sure for sure, Moses! I will. We are forming up a squad to this effect.
I am always sadden at the thought of anyone being hungry, the state I live in they say 1 out of 8 children go to bed hungry..our world needs a way to feed those that need food..thank you for posting about this!
Wwwoooaahhhh…what??? 1 in 8? This just canβt be happening, Holly. Letβs fight it, tooth and nail. Thank you for sharing.
I am amazed and appalled at the amount of food most countries waste, when there are parts of the world who struggle and scrape to be able to eat everyday. Simply heartbreaking photos.
??? itβs soooo bad!
This is so insightful, thank you for sharing!
??? youβre welcome. Please do something.
I cannot even fathom how world hunger is still an issue in this world. It floors me and breaks my heart in equal measure.
??? itβs really bad!
It’s unbelievable how many people at some parts of the world extremely suffers from hunger. I feel so lucky whenever thinking of it. No burgers for me tonight.
?? letβs do something from here on, Ruth!
I really believe that this is a very important issue to talk about. To say that this is saddening is an understatement. It’s really unfortunate that people all over the world do not have equal access to basic necessities, most importantly food. This is why we really have to do something. No matter how big or small, something is still something.
???????
The thought of people starving to death in 2019 is truly horrifying. I wish there was a lot more I could do.
?? there is. Donate all the food you donβt need in the moment and give it out to those that really need.
I grew up in a very poor country and not having food to eat every day was a regular occurrence. As a child, I thought it was like that everywhere… but I moved to a developed country and I see the amount of food that is wasted and it breaks my heart. Where is the middle ground?!
??? we are the middle ground, Ronnie. We have to do better.
This is a topic that must be discussed for frequently. It’s an extremely sad, worldwide issue. Itβs hard to believe that in this century there are still people who do not have access to basic necessities.
???
Ah, these photos are heart-wrenching, It’s so sad when people don’t give value to food and waste them.
??? itβs so sad. Look at war-torn regions of the world.
I get sick to my stomach when I think about how many people are out there going hungry while we just pitch so much food into the garbage.
Aawwww…
It is so heartbreaking to me that hunger is still so rampant in the world. The countries of this world have so much. We could actually solve this and so many other issues if we only worked together.
Aaahhhh…only if we did work together!
This makes me sad. It’s unnecessary and wrong. The fact that we throw so much food away is maddening. Thank you for bringing awareness.
Aaahhh…so annoying!
I hate wasted food and waste in general. We try really hard to only purchase and make what we will eat. I make sure food is consumed before it goes bad. Then we also turn around and compost the scraps on everything we can so it isn’t added to the landfill.
Yyyaaayyyy! Thanks, Stephanie!
This is why I tell my kids to always eat everything on their plate. It’s a privilege to be able to eat plentily and healthily.
Ah yes! You’re the best! Keep it up.
This is so sad and shocking. In this day and age noone should be left without food. It is a right to have food and so upsetting that people are starving like this xxx
Yyyeeeaaahhhhh…it’s so heartbreaking seeing people throw away perfectly good food!
I feel so sorry for those kids without food. Hunger is a huge problem in some countries and I cannot imagine how hard it can be for parents.

With your beautiful poem and explanation, you have discussed a serious topic, wasting food. People don’t get what they r wasting as a luxury, many crave even one bite. People are dying around the world from hunger. Great topic to discuss.

Great lesson, never take life for granted. There’s so much we can do to stop world hunger. Food may be a basic necessity to some, but for most, they don’t know where the next meal will come from. Thank you for shedding light on this sensitive topic.

Oh my lord, the pictures are just something never seen in my life and break my heart watching.
