Basically, what takes you to a banking-hall?
What is usually expected to come out of a financial institution?
What pops out or slides out of that big box in one corner of the building, when you press the right buttons and slide in the right piece of plastic into it?
Nice cars, nice house, nice shoes….what comes to mind?

Another uses it to cloth and shelter the neighbourhood
He uses it to fund terrorism
She uses it to school the nation

It is another’s salary
It is another’s pocket-change
It is another’s gold-mine and life

In the end, I take cash
Somebody else takes cheques only
Somewhere in Africa, somebody is taking mobile-money
Somewhere in America, it is all on someone’s tab

Some say it breaks up friends and families
Some say it builds friends and families
Some others say it brings out our true selves
Some say that it covers our past

Here you trade in shillings
Today, I transact in dollars and shillings mostly
Back in the day, it was cowrie-shells and I don’t know what else
I hear tomorrow shall be cashless

One person loves the sound it makes when coming out of the box
Another just loves the feel of it in their hands
Another loves the smell of it, in the morning
Somewhere out there, somebody just hates it all

Some people say it brought about a disease called capitalism
Others say it brought up the disease called greed
Others say it brought about some form of order amongst us
Others say it should have remained where it was
I wonder where that is

Thieves say that if you do it right, there won’t be a single trace
Investors say that they tie it up in investments and assets
Final consumers say it all ends up flying away from them or their hands

Now….it has signatures all over it
Electronic ones, by the way and not necessarily the original ones
Is this the case for all coins all over the world?

The common person speaks of it in terms of the last cent
Corporations speak of it….

Bad at your thing, you might get suspended or short-changed or laid-off

I like this! Money is different for everyone. How it makes them feel, how they view it, how they use it. But money is also a part of everyone. No one can function without it. But how important should it be?

reading your poem reminded me of the jessie j song – price tag and how the world is tied neck deep in this thing called money! people need to take step back and realise money isnt everything…yes u you need it but it shouldnt consume your whole life! there are so many other things out there that can enrich ur life much better like travel!
